Per Diem

A daily charge from the ocean carrier for keeping its container outside the terminal past the allowed free time. The clock starts when the loaded container is picked up and stops only when the empty is returned, so slow unloading or a late empty return adds cost every day. Per diem is often used interchangeably with detention and is billed separately from demurrage, which covers time spent inside the terminal.
